Come and see our Fall & Halloween front porch decorations and get in the festive mood for a charming, cozy fall holiday. Save this post to Pinterest so you can always see these ideas!
I was so slow on our front porch decorating this season. This was in part due to the fact that I’ve tried to really slow down and enjoy the season of life that I am in at the moment and not always plan for the next holiday like an Instagramer. But it was also partly due to the busy fall sports schedule with the kids and the launch of my cookbook {HERE} too. I love this time of year but it always feels packed with activities and things we have to do. So I have just been taking my time and easing into it all, including the fall and Halloween front porch decorations.
A little tradition
If you have followed me for awhile then you know that the front porch is something I love to decorate each fall. (What’s also crazy is that I don’t even know if I posted about it last season on the blog or on Instagram. Where have my falls gone?) The last few years I have been really trying to save money on the fall and Halloween front porch decorations. Last year, I grew my own broom corn to use on our posts. Each year I also grow our pumpkins. This season, I didn’t grow any corn because I just lost a little motivation after losing Naomi. But, I did get our pumpkins in the ground. However, I forgot to fertilize with compost and a lot of the pumpkins in our patch were small. We also had a very wet early season and have had a very dry last two months. Inconsistent, out of the ordinary weather never helps. Early in the season I was convinced we were going to lose them all due to blight. I’m so happy they seemed to pull through though, even if they were small. (Luckily, the ones just growing in the compost pile were enormous.)
Merging fall and Halloween
I normally don’t do a lot of Halloween front porch decorations and stick to mostly fall. This year I decided to merge the two because I was decorating a little late and may kids really get a kick out of all the Halloween decor. I added 17 funkins (faux pumpkins) to our front porch railing and they are just so fun. They make me happy every time I pull into our driveway. They even look good from the back when you are sitting on the front porch itself. I think they will be something we add year after year and maybe we will even add to the collection.
Since I’m such a lover of fall, I always feel like I can’t go too big on the Halloween front porch decorations, but I really think this works this year. I used dried corn on the posts, which I normal do, all our small pumpkin patch pumpkins and compost pumpkins and then I pulled in our dried hydrangeas too. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on flowers like I have in the past so I bought two small cabbages for the planters next to the swing and then relied on my dried flowers to create coziness, charm and texture.
Lights for the pumpkins
While I 100% do not recommend the hot knife I used to carve my funkins (refer to the video), I DO HIGHLY recommend the lights I used inside the funkins. They were inexpensive and wonderful. They allow you to use a multitude of single colors or you can make them changing multi-colored. My kids really loved that so we went with multicolored. I prefer the yellow or orange to look more realistic but sometimes the kids’ joy has to win. They also allow flashing and fading too. You can find them {HERE}.
